Advising & Degree Information

At Paradise Valley Community College, students can pursue both Associate Degrees and Professional Certificates (referred to as Certificates of Completion) in areas of Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technology.  For information on the different types of degrees and certificates offered, as well as information on how to get started pursuing your Fire Science/Emergency Medical Technology education, please see the respective section below.

Earn Credit for Prior EMS/Fire Service Experience & Education
PVCC offers a credit for prior learning program in both Fire Science and EMT.  We award credit for a student's previous fire service/EMS training, education, and experience. This credit is awarded based on current professional standards, specifically the awarding of credit for certification & experience meeting, or exceeding, National Fire Protection Association standards, and/or AZ DHS/National Registry standards. Please contact the FSC/EMT office at (602) 787-6782 to discuss this program and determine how you can be awarded college credit for your fire service/EMS experience.


ASSOCIATE DEGREES OFFERED

AAS- EMERGENCY RESPONSE & OPERATIONS (3112) - 2 Year Plan
           The Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Response and Operations provides students
           with the knowledge and skills needed in today's public safety workplace.  The program develops
           skills for planning, responding, and mitigating emergency situations with emphasis on effective
           response and operations.  The following are the focus areas students may choose for this degree
           (students may pursue multiple tracks):

                 TRACK I: FIRE OPERATIONS - Degree Checklist
                       - For those interested in becoming a firefighter and plan to take the Firefighter Operations
                       Academy (Firefighter I & II), this is the degree track to choose.
                       **MOST POPULAR FOR FIRE SCIENCE STUDENTS**

                 TRACK II: PARAMEDICINE - Degree Checklist
                       - For those interested in becoming a Paramedic, this is the degree track to choose.

                       - For those interested in a career in managing major emergency/disaster situations, this
                       is the degree track to choose.

                 TRACK IV: FIRE SCIENCE - Degree Checklist
                       - For those interested in becoming a firefighter, but do not want to take the Firefighter
                       Operations Academy (Firefighter I & II), this is the degree track to choose.

                       - For those interested in a becoming a fire/arson investigator, this is the degree track to

AAS- FIRE SERVICE PROFESSIONAL (3064) - 2 Year Plan - Degree Checklist
           The Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science provides instruction in practical firefighting,
           hazardous materials and fire service management.  It is designed to help professional fire service
           personnel more efficiently perform their duties and prepare students for a career in the fire service
           or related fields.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING DEGREES:
*The AAS- Emergency Response & Operations degree (3112) is the new degree used for all Fire Science & EMT students as of the Fall 2011 semester. All students beginning their degree in the Fall 2011 semester and after are to choose one of the tracks listed under this degree only.
*The AAS- Fire Science (3064) is strictly for students who started their fire science degree prior to the Fall 2011 semester, and will also be used for current professional firefighters trying to obtain an AAS. Those students who began their fire science degree prior to the Fall 2011 semester may also select a track in the AAS- Emergency Response & Operations (3112), as well as still receiving the AAS- Fire Science (3064).

GUIDE TO GET STARTED PURSUING FSC/EMT EDUCATION

Complete an admissions form on-line or in the KSC Building on campus.

If you have previous college credits from another college/university, send an official transcript from that college/university to the PVCC Admissions & Records office, and request the PVCC Admissions & Records office to process the transcript within two weeks of the official transcript sent date.

Complete college placement tests at PVCC. Contact the PVCC Testing Center at (602) 787-7050/website for information on tests offered/needed for your education path and hours of operation.

Setup an advisement appointment with the FSC/EMT Office Staff and/or Program Directors regarding the Fire Science, EMT, or Paramedic Programs. Contact the PVCC FSC/EMTOffice at (602) 787-6782 to setup an appointment. Please browse through the Degrees/Certificates section above for more information as well.
