The 2023 International Education Week (IEW) program is highlighting PVCC’s “Glo-cal” Colleagues.  International Education Week is a joint initiative between the US Department of State and the US Department of Education with the purpose of promoting programs that prepare Ameicans for the global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.

From Servant to Icon of Freedom, the Dog in 17th century Dutch art

Tomi Johnston became full-time faculty fall of 2014. Before that, she was adjunct faculty at Paradise Valley Community College, NAU, and ASU since spring of 2006. She earned her M.A. in Art History from ASU. She has also attended the ASDP institute at the East-West Center in Hawaii.  Courses taught: Introduction to Art, Prehistoric through Gothic Art, Renaissance through Contemporary Art, Art of Asia, Early 20th Century Art, Asian Ideas and Values, Mexican Art History, and Native American Art History. She also developed the curriculum for Art and Architecture of the Islamic World to 1800.  Johnston’s specialties in art history include Asian art, Dutch Baroque, animals in art, the early 20th century, Islamic art, and Mexican art history. Her thesis, “The Dog in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Painting,” led to a speaking engagement at the Sixteenth-Century Society Conference and a publishing contract.  Professor Johnston is now the Director if the Buxton Collection of Native American and Western Art in the Buxton Library.

Chinese Calligraphy

Li (Lili) Kang; M.A.; M.L.S., Library Faculty, PVCC

Lili was born and grew up in Linfen, Shanxi Province, China. She earned her B.A. degree in English from Shanxi Normal University.  Lili came to the U.S. and got her Masters in English in 1989 and then her Masters in Library & Information Science in 1991 from the University of South Florida (Tampa, FL). 

She has worked as a professional librarian for about 29 years, 9 years in a public library in Orlando, FL and 20 years as a Library Faculty in the Maricopa Community College District in metro-Phoenix, AZ (including 10 years at PVCC). She has also taught Chinese and English in colleges. Lili has a passion for being a teacher-librarian, interacting with faculty, students, and community, infusing information literacy and critical thinking, as well as igniting the learner’s passion for deeper learning and self-discovery in and outside the classroom. Meanwhile, Lili has devoted many efforts and time into cultural and intercultural exchanges and global awareness over the years. She has organized and coordinated the annual Lunar New Year Celebration at PVCC for 10 years, which has become a signature event for the college. 

Lili loves gardening, hiking, Yoga, Pilates, reading, and travel. Calligraphy has been a hobby since her childhood and she enjoys showcasing and sharing this art form with others. Lili travels frequently in the states and between China and the U.S.. She and her family reside in Scottsdale, AZ.

Harmonizing Cultures: The Dina Preston Band Tour to Tunisia in the Digital Age

Dr. Preston-Ortiz, who owns a global entertainment company, also serves as a residential faculty member and Program Director, focusing on small business development at Paradise Valley Community College. In her previous role as Chair of the Business/IT Division, she received national recognition for her teaching, and staff and organizational development.

Her research, "The Effects of Trust in Virtual Strategic-Alliance Performance Outcomes," is featured in the Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture. She and her husband, Don Ortiz, authored the award-winning book "31 Steps to 43 Countries: Hardcore Tips for Increasing Profits," available on Audible, Kindle, and Amazon.

Through their business, DEO Entertainment Group, she and her husband have traveled to 44 countries, providing entertainment and production services to corporate and government clients. Notably, they earned recognition, including the United Nations Protection Force & US Task Force Provide Promise Distinguished Service Certificate for peacekeeping support in Croatia. Since 2008, they've engaged in global music performances, business lectures, and entrepreneurial workshops on behalf of the U.S. State Department.

Yaqui Herbalism

Jewell Medina is a scholar in the PhD program of Chicana and Chicano studies at the University Of New Mexico. Her research interests include Chicana Feminist Cultural Production Of South Texas and the Cultural Production of Chicanas within social movements.  Her MA dissertation is entitled Women Who Wake With The Roosters And Other Xicana Sacred Spaces: Our Art Is Our Weapon. Malinches Protest Art Of HB 2281. This work has been presented at NACCS and Mujeres Activas En Letras Y Cambio Social Santa Barbara, Ca. Jewell is also a medicine woman curandera and artist with a permanent collection of her works in the Chicano Archives at Arizona State University. Jewell teaches Introduction to Chicana Feminism and is the community archivist for the Chicana and Chicano studies graduate organization.  Our art is our weapon is about lorrona consciousness and re-membering our stories for Chicana feminist liberation.

 

Victoria Terrazas is an alumnus of Paradise Valley Community College, after pursuing her AA degree she continues to work with students, faculty and staff. Victoria currently works in facilities as a program specialist, her passion for nature and animals have been a hobby since childhood. She started rescuing animals at the age of five, and has continued to re-home animals throughout her adulthood. Her love for animals came from her grandfather who worked on a farm in Maricopa, Arizona. Victoria’s grandmother used plants for healing remedies and grew most of the herbs herself. Victoria remembers helping her grandmother tend to the garden early in the morning, picking mint, aloe vera, and chamomile to make tea. Victoria continues her grandparent’s legacy by growing herbs, caring for animals and her love for them in her healing remedies.
