Awareness Months and Significant Events/Holidays

LGBTQ History Month & National Coming Out Day (October)

LGBTQ History Month is celebrated in October which coincides with National Coming Out Day on October 11, honoring the courage of individuals who come out and promoting awareness of LGBTQ history and achievements. October also marks the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights, which occurred in 1979.  LGBTQ history month emphasizes the importance of visibility, reflection, and recognizing the contributions of LGBTQ individuals throughout history.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (November)

Transgender Day of Remembrance, observed on November 20, honors the lives of transgender individuals lost to acts of violence and transphobia. It is a time for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to reflect on the ongoing struggles for transgender rights and safety while advocating for justice and equality.

Transgender Day of Visibility (March)

Celebrated on March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility is a significant day that honors the accomplishments and resilience of transgender individuals while raising awareness about the discrimination they face. This day highlights the importance of visibility in fostering acceptance and promoting the rights and recognition of transgender people in society.

Pride Month (June)

Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ rights movement, and is marked by parades, celebrations, and advocacy for equality. Pride month differs by highlighting the broader celebration of identity whereas LGBTQ History Month in October focuses on education, awareness of the historical contributions, and challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals throughout history.
