Join us Tuesday, October 27th for Women in STEAM, a panel discussion featuring professionals working in various STEAM-related fields. We will explore the exciting and underestimated STEAM-related degrees and fields, hoping to create a greater awareness of various STEAM fields and how to attract more women and minorities to pursuing degrees and careers in this area.
Studies show that young girls and women are systematically tracked away from science and math throughout their educations, and according to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), women, today, make up only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering, and math. PVCC’s STEAM Committee hopes to change that. Our panelists will be asked a series of questions including why they chose to pursue a career in their respective fields, to discuss any challenges that they may have faced, and to have an open floor for questions from students and community members.
Skyhook Foundation, a non-profit bringing educational STEM opportunities to underserved communities, states:
- 15 out of the 20 fastest growing occupations require significant math and science proficiency
- Currently only 16% of U.S. bachelor’s degrees will specialize in STEM.
- College STEM majors out-earn other college grads
- The STEM jobs market grew by a whopping 45% just two years ago and continues on an uphill swing.
This is an incredible opportunity to learn more about the field and the opportunities at PVCC.
