The Kiwanis Club of Carefree Benefit Foundation recently made a generous donation to the Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) Fire Science Department. This contribution will fund critical equipment and resources necessary for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) assessment, enhancing students’ preparation for careers in firefighting.
“The support from the Kiwanis Club of Carefree will make a significant impact on our Fire Science Program,” said Matt Gallaugher, Fire Science Program liaison. “This contribution allows us to enhance our training and ensure our students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the job and save lives in our community.”
The CPAT is a standardized physical assessment that evaluates a candidate’s readiness for the physically demanding work of firefighting. With the funds provided by the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, PVCC is able to purchase essential items to prepare students for the test including a Stepmill and accessories such as weighted vests, helmets, and gloves. These resources ensure students can train safely and effectively, equipping them to meet the rigorous demands of this certification and excel in their future roles as firefighters.
A New Era for PVCC Fire Science
The need for skilled firefighters is rising both locally and nationally. This initiative represents a significant step in addressing that demand while providing students with a competitive edge in their careers.
Students enrolled in PVCC’s Firefighter Operations Academy are exposed to realistic training scenarios, including live burns, vehicle extrication, hose lays, ventilation, and more. They also gain insight into fire department culture, preparing them for the realities of the fire service. The introduction of the CPAT program at PVCC builds on this foundation, offering students the tools they need to succeed in their certifications and careers.
While the CPAT is a nationally established program, its implementation at PVCC is a groundbreaking step for the college. As a start-up initiative, the CPAT program enhances PVCC’s fire science offerings and addresses the growing demand for physically capable firefighter candidates. This program not only supports students pursuing careers in public safety but also positions PVCC as a leader in preparing highly qualified first responders.
Building Stronger Community Connections
For decades, students from the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) have attended PVCC, with many taking advantage of the college’s Black Mountain campus in Carefree. The superintendent of CCUSD and representatives from the Kiwanis Club of Carefree serve on PVCC’s President's Advisory Community Council (PCAC), highlighting the strong community partnership. Moving forward, PVCC plans to engage further with local schools through job fairs and career days, introducing students to the college’s Fire Science, EMT, and Paramedic programs. This collaboration will strengthen ties with the community and create a pipeline for future students interested in public safety and emergency services.
