Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is addressing the nationwide shortage of accountants with its innovative second bachelor’s degree program: a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with an emphasis in Accounting, set to begin in Fall 2025. Building on PVCC’s long-standing commitment to accessible, high-quality education, the new program aims to meet the growing demand for skilled accounting professionals while expanding career opportunities for students in the region.
“We’re excited to offer this pathway and expand options for our diverse student body,” said Dr. Jana Schwartz, PVCC President. “By equipping our students with the skills and knowledge needed for high-demand careers, we’re creating opportunities that not only transform individual lives but also strengthen the economic vitality of our region.”
The BBA in Accounting provides students with a strong foundation in the field, offering exposure to key areas such as financial reporting, taxation, auditing, and compliance. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are prepared for roles in public accounting firms, government agencies, and corporations. Virtual learning options make the program flexible for students balancing work, family, and other commitments.
A Response to Workforce Needs
Accounting professionals and auditors earn a median annual wage of approximately $73,000. However, the industry faces a growing shortage of qualified accountants.
“Accountants are essential in today’s complex business landscape, given the increasing need for accurate financial reporting and compliance with financial regulations,” said Lynn F. Clark, CPA, program director for Accounting, PVCC. “Our program not only broadens pathways for our students but also addresses the critical workforce needs of our region. Together, we are building a future that benefits individuals, families, and businesses alike.”
The BBA curriculum builds on PVCC’s associate degree in Accounting, which provides a foundational education for entry-level roles. The associate program offers specialized tracks in tax or accounting, enabling students to pursue credentials like the Enrolled Agent (EA) license or Certified Bookkeeper (CB) designation.
Community-Driven Education
PVCC’s new bachelor’s program reflects the college’s mission to provide affordable, career-ready degrees and its commitment to fostering equity in higher education. It follows Arizona’s SB 1453 legislation, which authorized community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in high-demand fields. This program joins PVCC’s existing Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Special Education, launched in Fall 2023.
Next Steps
Applications for the BBA in Accounting will open in Spring 2025, with classes starting in Fall 2025. PVCC is also working closely with Arizona universities to ensure robust transfer pathways and career support for students pursuing further education.
With its focus on flexibility, workforce readiness, and student success, PVCC’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting is poised to make a significant impact in addressing the accounting shortage and supporting the next generation of professionals.
