PVCC and GCC Collaborate for Sunday Night Rock Show

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) and Glendale Community College (GCC) joined forces for an electrifying Sunday Night Rock Show last month at The 44 Sports Grill in Glendale, AZ. This free concert showcased eight student bands from both colleges, featuring a dynamic mix of rock, pop, punk, and metal, and celebrating the collaborative spirit of Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) musicians.

“This shared concert was a tremendous success,” said PVCC Performing Arts Director Dr. Chris Scinto. “It was amazing to see students from both campuses supporting each other throughout the night, performing everything from pop and R&B to rock and metal.”

The collaboration between PVCC and GCC provided an incredible opportunity for students to experience performing in a professional venue and to interact with fellow musicians from across the district. The performance was even more meaningful due to GCC’s Performing Arts Center being temporarily closed because of damage from a fire.

GCC’s Music Director Dr. Ben Hedquist emphasized the importance of partnerships like this, saying “These collaborations give students the chance to meet other musicians, learn from each other, and become part of a larger musical community. It’s not just about the music; it’s about building connections and strengthening our programs across MCCCD."

For many students, the night was transformative. Jessi Lawrence, a PVCC popular music student and wheelchair user, appreciated the inclusive support from faculty. “The faculty were always prepared—there was a ramp plan before I even asked—and I know I can turn to them for help without hesitation,” she said. “Performing in new venues and collaborating with other musicians is an incredible opportunity to grow and I’m learning a lot about preparation and how to navigate potential access barriers. Most importantly, I loved cheering on all the bands and felt inspired by the supportive atmosphere.”

GCC student Jude Walkner, performing with popular music ensembles for the third semester, reflected on the unique experience of playing off-campus. “Performing at The 44 was so different from campus recital halls. I learned a lot about gigging and playing small venues,” he shared. Fellow GCC students Spencer Sheldon and Mark Madison echoed this excitement, with Madison adding, “Seeing other creatives express themselves and supporting each other made the night unforgettable. I can’t wait to do it again!”

For PVCC’s five rock bands, this mid-semester performance marked a significant opportunity to refine their craft in a new setting. Scinto noted the importance of diverse venue experiences, adding, “Performing in different-sized venues helps students learn to adapt their performance techniques, equipment, and stage presence. These are essential skills for anyone pursuing a career in popular music."

The Sunday Night Rock Show demonstrated the power of collaboration, creativity, and community. PVCC and GCC will team up again on Monday, December 16, for another shared performance at The 44 Sports Grill in Glendale. Doors open at 6 PM, and the music starts at 7 PM. Admission is free, with donations welcome.
