Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) made history this year by welcoming its largest-ever group of new students at the Fall 2024 New Student Orientation. A total of 617 students gathered over two Saturdays and a Thursday evening, marking a significant milestone in PVCC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, vibrant community.
This year’s orientation was more than just a meet-and-greet; it was an immersive experience that introduced students to the heart and soul of PVCC. The event was a powerful collaboration between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, bringing together Field of Interest (FOI) faculty, advising analysts, student peer leaders, and the Center for Performing Arts (CPA) team to create a dynamic, welcoming environment.
The day kicked off with a warm reception at 8 a.m. The Orientation Team greeted students, who enjoyed a light breakfast and explored essential student services, including Financial Aid, Student Life, Career Services, and Disability Services. By 8:30 a.m., students moved to the CPA for a high-energy rock concert performed by PVCC’s faculty and staff rock band—a unique feature that sets this orientation apart from others.
“Our orientation is designed to do more than just inform—it’s about creating a sense of belonging and community,” said Dr. Jana Schwartz, PVCC President. “We want our students to feel supported from day one, knowing they are part of something special here at Paradise Valley.”
Mike Ho, Manager of Student Life and Leadership, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the evolution of the New Student Orientation program. “When I was asked to plan Orientation, I realized that many of the elements were already happening in advising sessions, workshops, and the First Year Experience class,” Ho explained. “This allowed us to focus on enhancing students’ sense of belonging, which was especially important as we emerged from the pandemic. Our program became less about what students remember and more about how they feel supported by PVCC.”
This year’s orientation theme, “Choose Your Own Adventure,” was designed to empower students as the protagonists of their own educational journeys. This theme resonated deeply with students, reminding them that their stories are still being written and that they have the power to shape their futures.
The breakout sessions, a highlight of the day, allowed students to dive deeper into their chosen fields, connect with peers, and meet the faculty who would guide them throughout their academic careers.
“As chemistry faculty and the STEM FOI Faculty Lead, I was excited to facilitate a STEM breakout session alongside our STEM Analyst and Peer Leader,” said Linda Stearns. “During the hour-long session, we gave our new STEM students a glimpse into what they should expect during their college years, along with tips for succeeding through a STEM-focused lens. We also engaged the students in activities like STEM trivia and small group discussions so they could get to know each other. Participating in New Student Orientation was an energetic, fun, and uplifting experience. It was clear that everyone involved—from our administrative team to faculty and staff—was fully invested in supporting our new students. I have no doubt the students felt the love they were shown.”
Peer leaders were instrumental in creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. “The rock band and the kindness of the Peer Leaders really set this orientation apart,” said Addie Mattox, a PVCC Peer Leader. “I love being a Peer Leader—talking to students, helping them out, and being there for them. After orientation, I feel recognized and trusted by the students. I couldn’t ask for a better on-campus job!”
For Peer Leader Alexis Duron, the NSO program was a testament to PVCC’s student-centered approach. “The leadership team organizes the event to ensure incoming students not only feel comfortable in their new environment but empowered in their decision to become a part of this community,” Duron said. “As I grow into my Peer Leader role, I feel more connected to my campus community. The energy of New Student Orientation is dynamic and engaging, setting a positive tone for the semester ahead.”
The impact of the orientation was also reflected in the feedback from students, who expressed newfound confidence and excitement about their journey at PVCC. “I used to think community college was not the place for me, but now I know I belong here,” one student shared during the breakout session. Another commented, “I used to think I would struggle making friends and joining a club, but now I know there are so many opportunities.”
Kymora Sutherland, a current student, shared her experience when asked how New Student Orientation helped prepare her for college. “NSO was great! It was a way to introduce me to campus and get an idea of what life will look like. I got to meet my advisors and some people in my FOI with whom I still interact, and I was able to get an idea of the programs offered. I can also appreciate the breakfast and T-shirts, so I can always have something to look back at. I was scared at first, but the support I felt from the volunteers and mentors was amazing. I truly felt encouraged and ready for my first day of college, and I hope that students continue to take advantage of this memorable experience.”
