Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival Marked 16 Years of Celebrating Cinema and Community

The 16th Annual Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival was an unforgettable celebration of both cinema and community. The three-day event, held from Jan. 24-26, highlighted the central role of family - whether biological, chosen, or communal - plays in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. This year, the Desperado Foundation invited everyone “to explore stories that celebrate the diverse and lasting strength of family, connection, and belonging within the LGBTQ+ community.”

Desperado has always been a platform for unique storytelling, and in its 16th year, the festival aims to showcase a broad spectrum of narratives that resonate with LGBTQ+ audiences as well as those seeking to better understand the lived experiences of the community. From heartwarming tales of chosen families to more complex explorations of identity and belonging, this year’s lineup promised to leave attendees feeling deeply connected to the shared human experience.

“We are so grateful to our audience for helping us build a vibrant event here at Paradise Valley Community College,” stated Alan East, the Festival Programmer at Desperado Foundation.

The festival continues to grow thanks to the generosity of its supporters, who make it possible for Desperado to bring accessible LGBTQ+ films to the public, as well as fund important initiatives like LGBTQ+ scholarships and college diversity events.

Madison Hamby, a staff member at PVCC, also shared, “My own experience attending Desperado was nothing short of magical. The nights were filled with energy, drawing a fantastic crowd that was both diverse and united in their shared enthusiasm for LGBTQ+ storytelling. Live music created a warm atmosphere, and there were plenty of delicious food, snacks, and drinks to keep everyone satisfied. The free LGBTQ+ accessories – such as lanyards, stickers, socks, and pink cowboy hats – were a hit, adding an extra layer of fun to the experience. I was particularly impressed by the positive and welcoming environment, where smiles were abundant and people were openly engaging with one another—whether they were filmmakers, first-time attendees, or regulars returning for another Year.”

“The sense of community was palpable, with everyone mingling and enjoying the beautiful art exhibition and films being showcased. Desperado is more than the films; it’s about the connections made, the shared laughter and tears, and the collective recognition of the importance of family in all its forms. It is a reminder that we are all bound together by the stories that unite us and the love that is shared, regardless of the identities we hold.”

For those who are passionate about the films and the stories they tell, Desperado offers an exciting opportunity to vote for the 2025 Audience Award. An attendee can see a film that resonates with them, they can cast their vote for it, giving a stake in the celebration of these diverse and important works.

For those who wish to further support the festival, donations can be made through Desperado’s website, ensuring that they continue to be a beacon for LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusion.

As the 16th Annual Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival has passed, it is clear that this year’s event was more than just a celebration of cinema—it was a gathering of hearts, a reminder of the power of chosen family, and an opportunity to be part of a larger conversation about connection, belonging, and love.
