PVCC New Bachelor’s Degree Aims to Address Accounting Shortage

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is taking proactive measures to address the national shortage of accountants by launching its new Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) — Accounting. Having received accreditation in Fall 2024 from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), this new program provides students with an accessible, affordable pathway to a rewarding career in accounting—without the need to transfer to a four-year university. The program is set to begin in Fall 2025, expanding career opportunities for students in the region and meeting the growing demand for skilled accounting professionals.

“This new program reflects PVCC’s commitment to providing high-quality, accessible education that directly meets workforce demands,” said Dr. Jana Schwartz, President of PVCC. “By offering a bachelor’s degree in accounting, we are equipping students with the skills and credentials they need to succeed in a vital industry while strengthening our local economy. This is an incredible opportunity for our students and our community.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for skilled accountants continues to rise; employment for accountants and auditors is projected to grow six percent from now to 2033, surpassing the average growth rate for all other occupations. This translates to approximately 130,800 job openings annually, driven by retirements and career transitions. Accounting professionals enjoy job stability due to the essential nature of financial management in all industries.

PVCC's BBA in Accounting builds directly upon its well-established Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Accounting. This seamless transition allows students to complete their associate degree and continue into the bachelor’s program without leaving PVCC. The AAS program lays the foundation for entry-level accounting roles and offers specialized tracks in tax or accounting, helping students earn industry-recognized credentials such as the Enrolled Agent (EA) license or Certified Bookkeeper (CB) designation.

The bachelor’s program extends this foundation, equipping students with knowledge in key areas like financial reporting, taxation, auditing, and compliance. With its focus on core business and accounting principles, quantitative and analytical skills, and ethical standards, PVCC’s bachelor’s program prepares students for dynamic careers while offering affordability, flexibility, and personalized support. It is designed to accommodate students balancing work, family, and other commitments. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are well-prepared for diverse career opportunities in public accounting firms, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporate settings.

"We've developed the program with workforce in mind, ensuring students are introduced to a wide range of topics,” explained Lynn F. Clark, division chair and accounting faculty. “There are so many paths students can take in accounting to find what they are truly passionate about. Our program not only broadens pathways for our students but also addresses the critical workforce needs of our region. Together, we are building a future that benefits individuals, families, and businesses alike."

Graduates of PVCC’s BBA in Accounting will be well-positioned for careers in accounting, auditing, tax planning, forensic accounting, management consulting, and more. Opportunities extend across industries, including nonprofit organizations and government agencies, allowing professionals to align their careers with their interests. Furthermore, accounting principles apply globally, offering international job prospects and experiences.
